Extremely Wonderful!

My older sons LOVE the Extreme Dot-to-Dot books. It was very disheartening to see them "out-grow" doing dot-to-dot books. Although they still loved them, the typical dot-to-dot books were just to easy for them. I was thrilled when I Read more

And I thought dot-to-dot was for little ones!

My older (4th grade and up) children LOVE these Extreme Dot to Dot Animals books! They take them in car rides and ask to do them to unwind from regular school work. They are so fun because, unlike simpler Read more

Wrap-Ups Multiplication

Wrap-Ups Multiplication

My daughter struggled learning her times tables. It was too challenging and emotional for her and me. I fretted over what to do and prayed. I remembered hearing about wrapups and wondered if it would help her. It was the answer. Once she had the math in her hands she took off. Before we couldn’t move forward in math, but this was the tool that opened up the door for her and got her on her way to math success. She is doing very well now and I am grateful and less stressed as to whether she would ever achieve any success in math. If any parent is struggling with a child who is reluctant in math, perhaps the child hasn’t grasped their basic tables. It is essential to memorize these for math success and the math wrapups could be the answer for your child. They have worked wonders for us.

Apologia Exploring Creation with Astronomy

Apologia Exploring Creation with Astronomy

Apologia Exploring Creation with Astronomy

This (Apologia Exploring Creation with Astronomy) is a good astronomy course, and you can use it for a variety of ages. I’m using it with a first and second grader right now. The writing is easy enough for them to understand, and they really enjoy the readings.

While the tone of the writing is more Charlotte Mason than the usual textbook, it is still, nevertheless, a text book. I would have enjoyed it more if the book had been written in the format of a regular book. However, it is an easy way to teach astronomy without having to evaluate a stack of books from the library.

A Reason for Handwriting

Excellent product with a couple of small downsides

A Reason for Writing - A/1st Grade

I used A Reason for Writing during this past school year for my sons, ages 6 and 8. I loved the concept of the Bible verses. I loved that the lessons were brief. My boys have a short attention span. I was using book A for my 6yo and book B for my 8yo. I saw no difference in difficulty or verse length between the two books. In the end I think both of my boys have good handwriting and I won’t have either of them go through another printing workbook. They were helpful, but one was enough. My boys didn’t get the border sheets. I tried to inspire them, but they just wanted to do the writing and be done, not color the page and share it. This is a personality thing. My daughter, who is 4, will eat that concept up in a year or two. So keep your child’s personality in mind. Lastly, the pages are hard to tear out. When you tear our their special paper for them to do their Very Best Work on and it RIPS, it’s frustrating. Be very careful tearing out your border sheets.

Cuisenaire Rods Introductory Set

Cuisenaire Rods Introductory Set

Cuisenaire Rods Introductory Set

We used these (Cuisenaire Rods Introductory Set) my son was in first grade.  Later, I got rid of them in a frantic effort to clean out clutter in my house.  A few days later my son was looking for them and became quite disturbed that his math rods had been given away!  Apparently they made a great impression on him, and he really dislikes the plastic rods I replaced them with.   Maybe your kids will like cuisenaire rods as much as my son does.  Timberdoodle’s are wooden and that makes a big difference.

Note from Timberdoodle: Our rod sets are actually a very high-quality plastic, just so you know!

Now I'm Reading!: Level 1 Animal Antics

We’ve used this series for both kids while learning to read. I love that each book builds their reading skills and the kids love that they are silly. My daughter also liked the fact that she could add a sticker to each book she completed!

miniLUK Starter Pack

I ordered the 1st grade curriculum and when I saw that it came with the MiniLUK I honestly didn’t know what to think.  What I did think was that my son was going to have trouble with it and probably not like it.  Boy, was I wrong.  I had opened it up to figure it out and he starts playing with it.  He spent the whole evening playing with the MiniLUK.  My husband had to drag my son away from it so he could go to bed.  I am excited about buying more books for this game.  This is defiantly worth the money!
