Extremely Wonderful!

My older sons LOVE the Extreme Dot-to-Dot books. It was very disheartening to see them "out-grow" doing dot-to-dot books. Although they still loved them, the typical dot-to-dot books were just to easy for them. I was thrilled when I Read more

And I thought dot-to-dot was for little ones!

My older (4th grade and up) children LOVE these Extreme Dot to Dot Animals books! They take them in car rides and ask to do them to unwind from regular school work. They are so fun because, unlike simpler Read more

Macbeth - Graphic Shakespeare Graphic Novel

As a literature major in college, I developed quite the affinity for The Bard. However, I have never agreed with the notion that Shakespeare plays should be read as they were written to be performed. But managing to take Read more

Bubber – This is great stuff!

Bubber

This is great stuff! It is light, cuts easily with a plastic knife, can be rolled flat and cut with cookie cutters. The plastic molds that Timberdoodle sells are inexpensive and enable one to make a nice castle, or cut the pillars into coins, cookies, blocks, etc. It is dry enough that any that falls on the floor sweeps up easily. It is non-toxic but has a slight odor. It can be formed into a ball but it takes a bit of pressing to smooth it out. I recommend getting the big bag. I brought it to the table for my toddler grandson, and my adult children couldn’t wait to get their hands on it!

Bubber – Picture Review

Playing with Bubber

My 6 yr old daughter loves playing with Bubber. My daughter has Down syndrome which causes low-muscle tone so fine-motor activities can be difficult for her. With the light, soft texture she is able to easily manipulate the product. She is able to use the spoon knife and cut clean lines right through Bubber with no problems. It is also gluten-free which is a bonus since my daughter also has Celiac disease.

Knex Education Levers and Pulleys Set

Knex Intro to Simple Machines: Levers and Pulleys

I have two ‘hands on’ boys who love to build. When I wanted to teach them about simple machines I knew that building the machines would be an ideal way to make the concepts stick. Knex building sets make this easy to do. The set comes with all the necessary pieces, instructions and lesson plans. The pieces are durable and color coded so assembly is easy. The sets are ideal for families teaching multiple ages. My boys are six and nine. They easily built the models by themselves and then performed the simple experiments with my instruction. I plan to use these sets again when they are older because the lesson plans also include formulas for figuring out basic physic problems. Wonderful find. Highly recommended.

TwigJig

TwigJig

TwigJig

I bought TwigJig for my 14yo son for Christmas and he has really enjoyed it.  I wasn’t sure if the forms would work as well as they do in the video but they do!  You can make some amazing structures with this. My son has made two bridges and a tower. I only wish there was booklet of projects that came with the kit. He just made his designs up as he went (which is probably better for him in the long run :) ).  I see above where it says the kit comes with plans for a bridge but I don’t think we got that with our kit – maybe it is a new addition?  TwigJig is well worth the money and I highly recommend it!

Knex Extravaganaza

Knex Extravaganaza

Knex Extravaganaza

When I bought Knex Extravaganaza I was a little overwhelmed by the price but it was worth every penny!  My son has Asperger’s and not only did he love the engineering and physics we learned but it was also a tremendous help in things like patience, perseverance, following directions, etc.  This is a fantastic set with several different smaller sets included so that you really get lots of physics curriculum units plus, the grand reward at the end, building and analyzing the huge structure at the end.  We also used this kit to discuss the cost of construction by assigning each piece a dollar value and each connection a “labor” cost.  A good exercise in money and planning (could we make a better and less expensive model of the same thing). You could really almost do a whole year of homeschool based on this curriculum (math, writing, science, reading, etc).  We have also found the people at Knex very helpful in terms of sending us replacement parts, extra little things we wanted, etc., often at no charge.   Excellent product and worth every penny…. I think that we will save up for the big bridge set next….

Knex Intro to Bridges

Knex Intro to Bridges

Knex Intro to Bridges

The Knex Bridge curriculum is a great hands-on way to learn about bridges.  My son, age 8, loves it, and my husband, age not revealed, loves teaching it to him.  It is a great value for those who love hands on learning.  The instructor’s guide changes it from a toy to a learning experience.
