Extremely Wonderful!

My older sons LOVE the Extreme Dot-to-Dot books. It was very disheartening to see them "out-grow" doing dot-to-dot books. Although they still loved them, the typical dot-to-dot books were just to easy for them. I was thrilled when I Read more

Macbeth - Graphic Shakespeare Graphic Novel

As a literature major in college, I developed quite the affinity for The Bard. However, I have never agreed with the notion that Shakespeare plays should be read as they were written to be performed. But managing to take Read more

The Reading Lesson Book

Perfect! I wouldn’t change a thing with this book. My 6yo finished it today, and we enjoyed every lesson. The print size gradually changes as the book progresses; the black & white pictures helped my son to understand the story, but not distract him; each lesson can be done as slowly or quickly as you and your child need it to be. In order to use this for the next kids, I used tracing paper on the few writing exercises in each lesson.

Now I’m Reading: Animal Antics

Now I'm Reading!: Level 1 Animal Antics

Now I'm Reading!: Level 1 Animal Antics

We’ve used this series for both kids while learning to read. I love that each book builds their reading skills and the kids love that they are silly. My daughter also liked the fact that she could add a sticker to each book she completed!

My reluctant readers love Tintin!

The Adventures of Tintin: Collector's Edition

We are a family of readers, but I noticed that two of our children did not seem to enjoy reading as much as the others.  After trying out one volume of Tintin with great reviews, we purchased the whole set last Christmas (yes, this means we have a duplicate, but in our family this doesn’t seem to be an issue) and five months later they are still my children’s steady companions.  We have yet to go on a road trip that Tintin has not accompanied us, and my reluctant readers have now also branched out into other books. My younger non reading children have been seen poring over these as well, and I am sure they are even more motivated to learn so that they too can read what Tintin is up to. Thanks so much for carrying these books!

Lightwedge Paperback

Paperback Lightwedge

We LOVE the Lightwedge! After reading about the lightwedge on Timberdoodle’s website, I knew we had to have it. My daughter reads every chance she gets and especially on the long trip to Grandma’s and Grandpa’s house. When coming home late in the evening, she can read until her heart’s content with the Lightwedge and it doesn’t disturb the driver like the light above her seat. We’ve only had to replace the batteries once in over a year (and she uses it a lot!). I think she even stays up at night and reads in bed after we’ve tucked her in. I recommend this for any parent who wants to keep their child reading even when it’s dark!

Jungle Doctor Books

Jungle Doctor Books

We absolutely love the Jungle Doctor books. They are full of adventure, a Biblical Lesson, and along the way you may learn a thing or two about being a doctor. I found two puppets of a lion and a Gorilla which make the books come to life even more. My 5 year old has now decided that he wanted to go to Africa and be a Doctor when he grows up.

Graphic Historical Novels

Graphic Historical Novels

At first I was very apprehensive about buying these books because I didn’t see the benefit in comic books. My first three children are girls so there was never really any interest in comic books and reading was not a struggle. They were all ‘bookworms’. My son,(4th grade) however, was a different story. It was becoming a struggle for both of us to get his school work done. I bought these books to encourage his love of reading and hoped that he would retain something of value from reading them. I want him to enjoy learning. Well, it worked. He read two of them in a matter of days. He thanked me over and over saying how much he liked the books. So, I got him reading, he is enjoying history, and as an added bonus, his sisters read the books whenever they get the chance. There are a couple of things that I wasn’t crazy about. For example, in the ‘Diary of Anne Frank’ she has a brief thought about what it would be like for Peter to kiss her. Also, in the T-Rex book, there is the mention of millions of years ago. These instances were talked about but minor compared to the value of getting my son interested in reading. I will be buying more in the future.

LightWedge

Lights the page not the room

I saw this (LightWedge) in the car of one of my friends one night. It was dark, and she did not like to drive with the light on. We had to read some materials, and her son pulled this LightWedge out. It was marvelous! We could read without the distraction of the overhead light in the car. It is perfect for travelers and for those who need to read in the dark. It is portable and easy to carry. I bought one for my father who has everything-except this!

The Adventures of Tin Tin

The Adventures of Tintin

My then 11-year-old son, Stephen, who was struggling with reading devoured his first Tin Tin book. He even collected his own funds to order another volume! he introduced a friend to the books and now his friend has more Tin Tin books than he does! What a blessing to see my son motivated to read and stealing every moment to get back to his Tin Tin adventure!

Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons

Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons

I heard about this (Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons) book from my sister who had used it with her children.  I used it with my two youngest sons when they were about 3.  I remember I was almost in tears, when my middle son read a stop sign.  With my youngest, we got through most of it, but it gave him the tools he needed to be a solid reader.  He is a bookworm, even now at 16.  My sister did use it with her kids at around 2 1/2.   Our kids were early talkers so maybe a rule of thumb would be to use as soon as they start developing language skills.

This book worked wonderfully for my boys. One does need to read the parent instruction carefully, I read it more than once to make sure I followed the program (being the stick-to-the rules accountant that I am).  The only regret is that I did not have this book to use with my oldest son, he learned to read by 4 but he does not have the same enjoyment of reading as my youngest two.

LightWedge

Lightwedge

Lightwedge

I hesitated to buy the LightWedge book light because of the cost, but I have always trusted the Timberdoodle reviews.  This is the best book light ever!  Everyone in our family uses it whether reading in the car or late at night in the bedroom.  It is also great for reading while waiting on the boys at various practices when it is dusky out but not quite dark!  Other family members have seen it and wanted it as well.  I plan to buy three for Christmas presents this year!
