Apologia – Exploring Creation with Astronomy
BACKGROUND: Although married to a biologist, I myself am not science-oriented. My 5 participants range from 2/3 to 11/12 years, with baby in tow.
ANALYSIS: The course is clearly laid out, experiments doable, and lessons interesting. The concepts are in depth enough to require focus, but not out of reach.
EXPERIENCE: We used this course over one year, studying science two days per week. Lessons lasted from one to three weeks. I adapted the readings to my children through some minor oral editing.
We did not buy the astronomy notebook. You can print astronomy pages from the apologia website. We wrote our own question sheets and a final exam based on questions and vocabulary words provided in the book.
I would have benefited from a more thorough explanation of a couple topics. The rest was superb! My children’s retention level was high, and their ability to intelligently reason through Creation vs. evolution has increased.
Daily 6-Trait Writing Grade 1
I absolutely love the content in Daily 6-Trait Writing Grades 1 and 2. It is easily managed in bite-sized portions. If I wasn’t homeschooling, I might use the second half of the workbook which is filled with transparencies for use with each lesson. For us, that is not useful. My only complaint is that I thought the book would be best if it didn’t have all the student and teacher pages together. If I’m going to use a workbook, I want to be able to keep the pages together and manageable. You cannot really do that in these books as the teacher plans and key are right by the pages your child will use. If you don’t want to tear the pages out of your workbooks, you may be disappointed with Daily 6-Trait Writing Grades 1 and 2.
Color Combi Pencil Sharpener
The Color Combi Pencil Sharpener is amazing. Expensive electric sharpeners are noisy and break; cheap little plastic sharpeners are dull and messy. This sharpener is quiet and sharpens to an angle that does not break easily. Plus it has a receptacle to catch the shavings. We tend to lose everything at our house, but even buying a few each year is worth it.
I bought Lonpos 303 game for my nephew for Christmas. It was one of the most passed around items of the Holiday. Whenever one person finished with it, someone else picked it up and started playing with it. Of course, the kids were much more successful with it than I was.

PrismaColor 60-Piece Pencil
Prismacolor Pencils are the only pencils to trust when sketching as they go on smoothly and the colors are realistic. Such a nice effect and last a long time. We still have some that we bought 11 years ago. The price is great too for such great quality.
Check out the amazing sale on the 60-Piece Prismacolor Pencils. Purchase 60 pencils for the price of 36.
Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons
Teach Your Child To Read In 100 Easy Lessons has been the best book to use to teach our four children how to read. Our daughter learned to read with this book and was a very fluent reader by the age of 4. Our other children also learned very quickly as well. It only takes 15 minutes which makes it tolerable for even fidgety children!
Kumon My First Book of Cutting
This Made the Difference! We first purchased My First Book of Cutting two years ago for my son (he was then four years old). My son is the “cautious type” and he would not use scissors because he was “afraid of messing up”. We worked with him in this book and within a few weeks he was accurately cutting out even tiny pictures from paper. He loved My First Book of Cutting and would work on as many pages at a time as I would allow. My now four year old daughter (the scissors queen) loves this book as well and is now also a very accurate cutter.
When we first received Alphabet Wrap-ups I thought they would be a little too complicated for my kids, but they surprised me by doing them immediately. We did have to skip a couple of the puzzles, but for the most part they were wonderful. We placed them in the car for trips and they were played with until they fell apart! Very educational and quiet!

Language Lessons for Little Ones 1
If you want to do narration, poetry, and picture study but don’t have the time to pull it all together Language Lessons for Little Ones is a great book to use. The picture selection held my children’s interest very well and I did not have to worry about inappropriate images that are often found in art books geared to adults. I did not use the phonics portion of Language Lessons for Little Ones so I cannot comment on that, but this is a lovely book and I enjoyed using it with my sons.
Wedgits 20-Piece Tote
My kids absolutely love Wedgits Starter Tote. It’s relatively simple to make complex looking designs, and while they don’t replace blocks, they are a great building medium. It’s also fun for kids to try and replicate the pictures on the cards.
