A Day in the Life of California Timberdoodlers

Meet Our Family:

Hello, my name is Ximena and this is my first attempt at homeschooling.

This summer we officially started homeschooling my preschooler. His name is Saul. He loves to play pretend. His favorite is being a super hero that saves his mommy.

Dad is an auto transporter so he spends long hours on the road, which gives the little and I plenty of time for hands on learning.

My son is learning his letter sounds and, since he loves to sing, every five minutes or so we break out into a song about the ABCs.

The online homeschool community gives me the confidence to know I can give my son a wholesome education and all the undivided attention he deserves.

Our Morning:

Mondays usually start with Mommy waking up to get Daddy’s lunch ready at 4:00 a.m.

Around 8:00 my son wakes up ready to start with breakfast, which is usually a platter of fruits and vegetables because my son is not a fan of breakfast food.

Our morning continues with our singing routine. We sing the ABCs, the days of the week and anything else we are feeling that day.

We usually get ready for the day and go to our local library where we sing and dance with our library friends. It has really helped my son. My son had a bad experience last year in private school so he is very shy in new situations and the library programs have been a godsend. Our first couple of times there he spent the whole time on my lap with his eyes shut so tightly closed I almost burst into tears. But a wonderful mom there told me not to worry and to keep bringing him. I did just that and now he loves the library.

That same mom introduced us to Timberdoodle. She homeschools her kids and she told me about how fun and hands-on the curriculum was.

As of now we are just using homemade curriculum but as soon as I gain enough confidence that I am enough to teach my child I will be purchasing a Timberdoodle kit. I truly believe it will help my son learn without me having to send him away to school.

Our Afternoon:

For lunch we usually have a quesadilla or a hot dog with more fruits and veggies. I don’t mean to brag but my son loves them.

In the afternoon we usually do a fun sensory activity and play with magic tracks. We love inventing new obstacles and cheering on the little car to make it thru them.

Our Evening:

For dinner we have whatever Daddy requests since he has been gone all day.

We spend a couple of hours of quality time and we get in the bath and get ready for bed.

Reflecting on the day, we’ve overcome some social anxieties, both me and the little.

We snuggle up for bed with a few books (by a few, I mean about 10) to enjoy before dozing off to dream land.

More About Our Family:

I am thirty years old. I have 4 kids, but my 3 oldest are not homeschooled. They are in private school and it works for them. My son is 3 years old and he has really bad social anxiety. That’s why we decided to homeschool. Looking back and if I could do it again I would’ve homeschooled my girls, too. When we adopted them they had a lot of emotional issues, too, that would have probably resolved sooner had I known better.

What made you consider Timberdoodle for the first time?

We first chose Timberdoodle for my youngest when we saw the options at a homeschool convention and were impressed.

Before you decided to use Timberdoodle, what was your biggest obstacle or concern about using a Timberdoodle Curriculum Kit?

I was a new homeschooler and there were many options out there, some cheaper. Also, choosing which kit was scary at first.

What helped you overcome that?

After using the complete curriculum package for my youngest daughter I got a good idea of what was necessary and I really liked many of the books she used.

If your friend decided to start homeschooling and felt overwhelmed, what would you tell her?

I would say hang in there. I have been homeschooling for five years now and we have had highs and lows every year. If what she is using is too much for them, she can always back down or even start over. The best thing about home school is the freedom to do what is best for them!

Is there anything unique about your family that you’d like to share with us?

Well, I have two math haters and really wish I had used Timberdoodle with my oldest much sooner than I did. It is so easy to get overwhelmed sometimes!

A Day in the Life of Utah Timberdoodlers

Meet Our Family:

Howdy! I’m M, and I’m a mother of 4-year-old I like to call Spunk. I moonlight as an author and my husband is a military man. We all love motorcycles, animals, archery, swimming and anything that keeps us together and laughing. We’ve been Timberdoodling for a year now starting with Preschool, now on Kindergarten.

Our Morning:

Our typical day starts with waking up LATE. No alarms here. We all wake up to Spunk, he’s the wake-up call. After a late breakfast, we try to tackle the basic chores of self-presentation, then I bust forth the Timberdoodle curriculum and pull out the things I think will hold the interest of a 4-year-old for an extended period of time. Hands-on games are the go-to, especially folding or cutting tasks and mazes. Then we’ll tackle a little book work, usually just a page or two in each so it doesn’t feel like we’re lingering or taking too long on any one task.

Our Afternoon:

Lunch is loose, but usually we all sit down after Timberdoodle for something that’s put together by Spunk. Yesterday it was bok choy with pine nuts alongside a peanut butter and jelly, today it was sprouted spelt spaghetti with lamb meatballs. The menu is very varied.

Usually we’ll throw in a science experiment or, weather permitting, a motorcycle ride where we talk about the flora and fauna.

Our Evening:

Evenings go late with us. Usually we all hit the recreation complex for a swim, or the park, or a raucous explosion of play kitchen toys if we don’t feel like going out, so our evenings are active and fun. Wrestling is a good way to vent out some anxiety, and Spunk loves to win. Giggling and laughter is also a requirement, then we all snuggle together and read a lot of books. This is my personal favorite time of day; reading A to Z Mysteries or Magic Tree House or Winnie the Pooh with my four-year-old calmly at my side, eyes filled with wonderment, is the best.

Favorite Timberdoodle Tool:

I love the Smart Games, personally. Three Little Piggies was conquered by my then-3-year-old in TWO DAYS. All of the puzzles! So I immediately hunted out the next level (Little Red Riding Hood) and we play with it daily. I also love the Kumon workbooks because they have so many different options and the imagery is great. It feels less like work and more like fun. We also really love the eeBoo cards for emotional IQ and empathy awareness.

More About Our Family:

Nah, we’re just an average or typical small family just making our way through the days and trying to live our lives in a way that we’ll look back and say, “Yep. No regrets, we had fun, shared our love and learned something new.”

What made you consider Timberdoodle for the first time?

I liked that it was diverse. Someone else had done the hard work of searching for the best and most effective subject curricula from all over the homeschooling world. This is my first year homeschooling, and needless to say, I was completely overwhelmed by all of the resources out there. Timberdoodle’s curriculum guide is so very helpful for getting me familiar with the materials and how often to use them and what to expect from my child for each subject. I also really appreciated the variety of learning options they gave: MiniLUK, fun readers, Scrunch Map, learning games, and movement/fidget supplies. I will definitely use Timberdoodle in the future and have already recommended it to numerous friends!

Before you decided to use Timberdoodle, what was your biggest obstacle or concern about using a Timberdoodle Curriculum Kit?

Which kit to buy.

What helped you overcome that?

We ended up getting the most extensive package simply because I was so clueless. It was a great decision!

If your friend decided to start homeschooling and felt overwhelmed, what would you tell her?

I would tell her how great Timberdoodle is! It truly makes homeschooling easy, and includes curricula and manipulative that play to different learning styles, so there’s flexibility within the curriculum bundle.

Is there anything unique about your family that you’d like to share with us?

We’ve got auditory and hands on learners. Timberdoodle is fantastic because all 3 of my kids (2-6 years old) have been learning in various ways simply because they’re in the same home as my daughter who is in school. The kids are all learning even when they’re not actively engaged in the process. Our 6-year old is flourishing and has learned so much!

What made you consider Timberdoodle for the first time?

I was shopping around online for something to do with my son in the fall. Winters are long here, so I knew we’d need something to help ward off too much boredom. And when I saw how hands-on and play-centric Timberdoodle is, I was thrilled. Since my son was only three, I really wasn’t interested in drills, but I was very interested in intentional play.

Before you decided to use Timberdoodle, what was your biggest obstacle or concern about using a Timberdoodle Curriculum Kit?

I wasn’t sure, from the descriptions, how my son would like all the different things in the kit.

What helped you overcome that?

I decided that, with all new things, there’s a moment of “not knowing” and you have to proceed to find out. We went through the kit carefully and made sure we weren’t getting “duplicate” toys, to keep our budget down, since some of the toys teach the same basic skills.

If your friend decided to start homeschooling and felt overwhelmed, what would you tell her?

Most of my friends have small kids. And when they think about homeschooling, they have this vision of a 12 year commitment to teaching their kids at home forever. They get all the way to high school AP Physics in their mind and think, “I can’t teach that!” So I say, “Your toddler isn’t ready for anything you don’t already know. Homeschooling this year isn’t a commitment to next year. And homeschooling makes life at home with a preschooler much more pleasant, since they are less bored.”

Is there anything unique about your family that you’d like to share with us?

My husband and I grew up overseas, and moved to MN for graduate school. Homeschooling has given us opportunities to meet people, because it gives you some common ground. We live in a homeschool rich part of the country, so that helps! But it definitely works for inspiring conversations with people.

A Day in the Life of Washington Timberdoodlers

Mrs. Leticia B. of WA

Meet Our Family:

Hi, I would like to introduce you to our interesting little family. Dad: Chris is a truck driver who loves the outdoors in his down time. Mom: Leticia, that’s me. My passion is sewing. Andrew, 26, homeschool graduate living in sunny California. Krystal, 23, homeschool graduate living in rainy Washington. They are both poetry buffs. Last, but not least, our twins, Marc and Isabelle, age 5. Our only pet is Princess Tigerlilly. She is an old, lazy, and slightly cranky kitty.

Our Morning:

We started our kindergarten year in March with our brand new Timberdoodle custom curriculum . Crazy, I know, but hey, we are homeschoolers–we can do what we want!

We made a major move in May and will be moving again in June or July. So typical has become subjective lately. However, we do get up early every morning and try to have school done before lunch time.

Our Afternoon:

During lunch we watch a cartoon and then play outdoors for a few hours. The twins tend to make up their own games that often include building and climbing with whatever is handy.

Our Evening:

Dinner time is a big deal because that is when Dad (aka Popi) gets home. There is love, hugs, and kisses all around, and then dinner to eat. The twins like to tell him about their day in general or about something they have done really well on in school.

Favorite Timberdoodle Tool:

My twins love, love, love, the GearPhun Gears. It is hard to pick a favorite though because we enjoy every thing that we bought so much.

More About Our Family:

Our family is probably unique in the gap between the ages of our kids. Our oldest homeschoolers are now adults, aged 26 and 23, while our twins are 5 years old. Our twins came to us through care the year our youngest turned 18. We were able to adopt our twins just a few days before their 3rd birthdays. So we have started all over with our homeschooling journey.

What made you consider Timberdoodle for the first time?

Although I enjoy teaching I was a bit disappointed in the other kits we used for 1st and 2nd grades. A friend recommended Timberdoodle and I enjoy teaching this curriculum. I know my child is getting an excellent education using these products.

Before you decided to use Timberdoodle, what was your biggest obstacle or concern about using a Timberdoodle Curriculum Kit?

I did not see a Timberdoodle booth at the homeschool conventions I attended so I was not familiar with your company.

What helped you overcome that?

A recommendation from a friend.

If your friend decided to start homeschooling and felt overwhelmed, what would you tell her?

I would ask what curriculum she is using because having the best materials for your situation makes all the difference is how the parent and child feel about homeschooling.

Is there anything unique about your family that you’d like to share with us?

There is nothing “one of a kind” about our family but my daughter is internationally adopted and a late-in-life adoption. I was 48 years old and my husband 51 when we traveled to China to meet and adopt our daughter who was just 1-year-old at the time.

Alicia from Union, KY

Meet Our Family:

Hello! My name is Alicia and I’m a homeschooling mom. My husband, Dan, works from home and is a software engineer. We have two children, Tristan (9 years old) and Malia (5 years old).

Tristan is a very bright soon-to-be 4th grader. He enjoys reading, playing on his tablet, parkour, and playing the piano.

Malia is our soon-to-be kindergartener who is always excited to learn something new. She especially loves being read to, enjoys pretend play with her friends, and soccer.

We enjoy our time spent together!

Our Morning:

A typical school day for our family begins right when we wake up. We like to work an hour or so before breakfast.

We take our breakfast break and some sort if exercise (a walk, bike ride, or just playing in the yard on pretty days).

We then continue on our schooling day and work till lunch.

Our Afternoon:

In the afternoon after lunch we usually do our fun learning, games, computer, piano lessons, and p.e., depending on the day of the week.

We try to wrap up our day by 2:30-3:00.

We often do chores in between subjects, not only to move around some, but to also be productive so we can enjoy the day after our work is complete.

Our Evening:

Our evenings consist of dinner, playing outside or games inside, followed by story, bath and getting ready for bed.

Favorite Timberdoodle Tool:

My son’s favorite thing to do last school year was Gravity Maze. My daughter is excited for the learning games this coming school year!

What made you consider Timberdoodle for the first time?

I’m a full time night nurse and am drawn to unschooling, however my type A personality prohibits me from jumping in completely. For one year I tried developing my own curriculum and it was a lot of work. Committing to the full Timberdoodle curriculum alleviated most of our schooling stresses. I get to know that he has a great knowledge base and he gets to work independently on days that I sleep and manages his own time completing math and typing. We usually invest 15 minutes when I get home in the am and another 15 before I leave in the pm. On my days off we do all of his work together. He doesn’t love doing his work but he is learning and it doesn’t take that much time. We love the flexibility and that the kit makes everything as fun and easy as possible.

Before you decided to use Timberdoodle, what was your biggest obstacle or concern about using a Timberdoodle Curriculum Kit?

The cost.

What helped you overcome that?

My personal value of education and how fun it made learning.

If your friend decided to start homeschooling and felt overwhelmed, what would you tell her?

Buy the complete kit.

Is there anything unique about your family that you’d like to share with us?

We are hobby ranchers. My husband works 7 days a week. I’m a full time ICU night nurse and I really push my son to achieve excellence. I’m quite driven and this curriculum helps me to reign it in and just cover what’s in the books so as not to overwhelm my 9-year-old.
