Lesson Plans for 5th and 7th Grade Language Arts

I just wanted to start out saying I LOVE TIMBERDOODLE. I love the way you pick everything out for me. It’s great. My question is I want to order the language arts program that you put together in the all in one package for the grades 7 and 5. I don’t need the full package for the grade level, because my mom ordered me the other stuff for my kids. So I am wondering if you have help with the lesson planning for just language arts for these grade levels. I have no experience with writing lesson plans and I am homeschooling 4 kids this year. If you have any ideas or can help I would REALLY appreciate it. thanks, Nicole
Hi Nicole,
Thank you so much for the encouragement!
Our lesson plans tend to be super simple. After picking the materials we want to use, we determine how many weeks we want to do school, then simply divide the pages in the book by the number of weeks in our school year. I know that’s wordy, so let me just show you:
For 7th grade language arts we typically like to use:
| Curriculum | Lessons or Pages | Weeks of school | Pages/lessons per week |
| Easy Grammar Plus | 310 worksheets | 36 | 9 worksheets |
| Wordsmith | 22 lessons/quizzes | 36 | 2/3 of a lesson |
| Sequential Spelling | 180 lessons | 36 | 5 lessons |
| Editor In Chief | 33 pages | 36 | 1 page |
We then give the student a weekly checklist that looks like this:
| Easy Grammar Plus | 9 worksheets | |||||||||
| Wordsmith | 2/3 of a lesson | |||||||||
| Sequential Spelling | 5 lessons | |||||||||
| Editor In Chief | 1 page |
Does that make sense? We are huge on student responsibility/accountability as soon as possible, and this is one way that works for us.
As far as what subjects to include, we look for grammar, writing, spelling and word roots. A child working through our curriculum bundles has already covered the appropriate Word Roots books for 7th grade (more come later) but if your student hasn’t yet done so, I’d look at adding that.
For 5th grade we start with
| Language Lessons for the Secondary Child volume 1 | 180 lessons | 36 | 5 lessons |
| Daily 6-Trait Writing 5th grade | 125 lessons | 36 | 1 week’s work |
| Editor In Chief | 33 lessons | 36 | 1 lesson |
| Sequential Spelling | 180 lessons | 36 | 5 lessons |
| Word Roots | 46 pages | 36 | 1-2 pages |
So their weekly schedule looks like this:
| Language Lessons for the Secondary Child volume 1 | 5 lessons | |||||
| Daily 6-Trait Writing 5th grade | 1 week’s work | |||||
| Editor In Chief | 1 lesson | |||||
| Sequential Spelling | 5 lessons | |||||
| Word Roots | 1-2 pages |
We have a free scheduling form coming soon that will automate a lot of this for those of you who would like to print/save custom schedules.
